The volcanoes we have chosen for Top Trumps come from all round the world, and some of them have names that might not be obvious, or easy, to say out loud. Other volcanoes have more than one name. So here’s a very quick guide to pronunciation. We have just taken some of the trickier names for now – but do let us know if there are others that you would like us to help with, or any that we have got wrong. In the quotation marks we have broken the names into sounds as if they were English words..
Erebus – “air – eh – bus”
Eyjafjallajökull – “ay-uh-fyat-luh-yoe-kertl-uh”
Kilauea – “Kill-a-way-uh”
Krakatau, or Krakatoa – “crack-a-taow” or “crack-a-toe-er”
Mayon – “my-on”
Nyiragongo – “Nigh-ear-a-gon-go”
Teide – “Tay-day”
Tungurahua – “toon-goo-rah-wah”
Villarrica – “via-rica”
